To be honest: it was a little bit quiet around Air Max over the last two or three years after a huge hype. But this year, Nike’s air bubble technology is making a big return. With the 20th anniversary of the AM 97 and the 30th anniversary of the Air Max 1, two of the most iconic sneaker silhouettes celebrate big birthdays.
As part of the celebration, several great retros, new colorways and even new silhouettes were released this year so far. As an editor’s choice, we went through all the 2017 drops to arrive at our list: “The 7 Best Nike Air Max Releases of 2017”. In the end, everybody has to decide on their own “Best Nike Air Max Releases” of the year, but here’s our ranking! (featured pic by @tupscnvlt – thx!)

The 7 Best Nike Air Max Releases of 2017
Air Vapormax: Nike released the VaporMax on Air Max Day 2017 and introduced a radically reinvented Air sole. Complete with the ultralight Flyknit upper, Nike managed to release a shoe with a full air sole and a weight of under 300 grams. After seeing the first releases for 2018 we’re sure the VaporMax starts a new era.
Nike Air Max 1 Pinnacle „Sail“: The Sail pack was the first pack of Air Max 1 after the „reshape“ that released wider. Great leather, clean colorways and a strong shape made sneaker heads go crazy – sold out in minutes!
Nike Air Max 1 X Atmos Elephant: Re-Releases of famous collaborations aren’t everyone’s „pair of shoes“. But after Nike had a big voting to bring back ONE classic Air Max colorway for this year’s AMD and the Elephant won, it was different. Two versions dropped in April. One was part of a pack with a Jordan IV in the same colorway. But the main release of the Atmos Elephant was sold separately at few selected retailers worldwide and caused campouts for days. Though some hardliners will say it’s not the same, the re-release still found many friends and is not cheap to get nowadays.
NikeLab Air Max Plus Sail/Black-Salsa Red: Sold only at NikeLab locations, this one definitely went under the radar. In the end, it’s one of the best AM TN’s with the characteristic shark teeth we’ve seen so far. It’s just so clean and has a great mix of materials!
Air Max 97 OG „Silver Bullet“: No Best of without this in 2017 – the „Silver Bullet“ definitely is a legend. After a small release in Italy, a wider release of the „Silver Bullet“ followed and sold out instantly in April. 20 years old, but the silhouette is still crazy contemporary!
Air Max 1 PRM Jewel „Ruby Red“: 30 years of Air Max and Nike finally managed to get the „old“ shape back. They also brought some older features back, such as the smaller Jewel swoosh that was seen in the early 00s more often. On June 5, Nike released the first two colorways of the „Jewel“.
Nike Air Max 97 „Summit White“: An off-white upper with synthetic snakeskin? Looks way better than it sounds. Released in June 29th, the „Summit White“ was a big success for Nike and is an amazing summer silhouette!
