6 Things to Know About the SONRA x PUMA Suede
After the very first SONRA collab with 24 Kilates, Hikmet Sugoer presents the next project of his premium sneaker brand. Joining the 50th anniversary celebrations for PUMA‘s Classic Suede silhouette, we’re now getting a first look at the SONRA x PUMA Suede Classic 50.
As usual, Hikmet added a lot of different references into the design. To give you some detailed insights into the inspirations behind this shoe, we’ve compiled 6 things to know about the SONRA Suede. Read on to find out more, then find the release info and some detailed pics below.
1. First Suede Memories
Hikmet first saw the Suede in the movie Beat Street from 1984, which he saw together with his brother Sükret in the Berlin “Marmorhaus”, a famous cinema in Berlin that closed in 2001. It was a PUMA-sponsored breakdance movie that inspired a generation of sneakerheads, especially with the impressive „Roxy Battle“ .
2. Remembering the Clyde
The SONRA x Puma Suede is a nod to previous collabs designed by Hikmet. His first one was the 2007 solebox x Puma Clyde. The Clyde was the Suede’s signature version for Clyde Frazier and the design was a nod to the player’s flamboyant style – with golden lining, hairy suede and faux snakeskin formstripe.
3. A Common Theme
Both the hairy suede and the faux snakeskin also appear on the 2013 Puma States collab for solebox’s 10th anniversary – and on the SONRA x Puma Suede.
4. Snakeskin Inspiration
The faux snakeskin formstripe used on Hikmet’s first solebox collab had a nice little story to it. The shoe actually came with a sponsorship for a Madagascar boa snake in the Berlin zoo
5. The Green Scheme
The colorway is called “Green Lilly”. It’s a mix between the typical Puma green on vintage boxes, the official Puma green and the green on the Sonra „Grasshopper“.
6. Rooted in Tradition
Patterns on traditional Turkish kilim rugs have a meaning and this is also the case for the pattern on the box and on the canvas carpet inside. It symbolizes Hikmet’s last name “Sugoer”, which stands for both “water” and “seeing”.
