2018 marks the 30th birthday of an icon, arguably one of the most important sneakers in the history of footwear: The Nike Air Jordan III Black Cement. First introduced to the public in 1988, this groundbreaking basketball silhouette was also the first design by Tinker Hatfield for his airness Michael Jordan.
Being very comfortable and lightweight at that time, featuring a visible air unit for the first time complete with the now notorious elephant print and Nike Air heel logo we all know so well, it made Michael Jordan stay with Nike. It was also the first model to have the famous jumpman on the tongue.
In order to celebrate this special occasion, Snipes invited the most important national bloggers like Sneakerb0b (@sneakerb0b) and Deadstock Sneakerblog (@deadstocksnkrblog) from Cologne or Eda (@edavendetta) from Berlin and Dani (@arrestthisgal) plus other urban tastemakers and influencers like Willy (@willy) or Eunique (@euniqueoffiziell) and her girl squad to a special event which took place at the Snipes flagship store located at Alexanderplatz in Germany’s capital of Berlin on Friday night. Delicious finger food and snacks like mini burgers, hot dogs, popcorn in especially branded bags and drinks were being served.
There was also a nice little installation with a pair of OG Jordan’s from every year the shoe released, beginning with 1988 of course – accompanied by old tv‘s where the old ads from that decade with Mars Blackmon were shown for that real vintage touch.
You could also have your photo taken on a little basketball court and there was even a basketball shootout arcade game to make the perfect setting complete.
After having seen retros of this truly magical shoe in 1994, 2001, 2008 and 2011 for the last time, the first re-release of the Air Jordan III Black Cement with Nike Air branding on the heel after a 17 year hiatus launched globally on Michael Jordan’s birthday, February 17th, 2018.
