Tell the haters to fall back, it’s time to spread some love! Valentine’s Day is upon us – and since sneakers naturally come in pairs, it’s only right that our cherrished culture joins in on the festivities. This year, Cupid’s arrow hit sneaker retail giant SNIPES and us at Sneakers Mag as we linked up to embrace a Swoosh classic: the Nike Blazer. Secret hint – scroll down to see how you can win one of ten pairs in our raffle!

From b-ball courts…

Originally released in 1973, Nike introduced the model as their basketball flagship. With its leather upper, mesh nylon tongue and a vulcanized rubber outsole, the Blazer was a standout sneaker at the time. In addition, it featured a large Swoosh on the side – the now-famous logo made its debut just two years prior. Worn by players like George “The Iceman” Gervin, the shoe quickly gaine popularity on the court. The San Antonio Spurs legend even received his own version with “ICEMAN” lettering across the heels, which might have been the first PE sneaker in NBA history. It was love at first sight for many ballers. But despite of that, the Blazer really caught traction when it set foot outside of the basketball court.

… to half pipes, catwalks and beyond

Like many initial performance models, the shoe made its way into an array of different subcultures. Thanks to its high top cut and grippy sole, it became a favorite for skaters in the 1980s. Retailing at around 100 bucks, the Blazer also maintained general popularity as a budget-friendly yet stylish sneaker in the 90s and beyond. But it was when it received the SB treatment after the turn of the millenium that it truly cemented its eternal spot in sneaker culture. Collabs with the likes of Supreme and Futura elevated the Blazer’s standing. And just like skate culture in general, the history-charged sneaker eventually leaped into high fashion. Thanks to sophistcated reworks by COMME DES GARCONS, Virgil Abloh and sacai, the Nike Blazer became the universal street fashion staple we know it as today.
