Despite being cherished as one of the epicenters of forward-thinking design nowadays, Japan is also known for an appreciation and ongoing cultivation of time-honored traditions. Ukiyo-e is an art form that came up during the 17th century and flourished until the 19th century. The woodblock prints and paintings usually depict themes like beauty and erotica, history and folks tales or landscapes. The term “ukiyo-e” translates to “picture[s] of the floating world” and one of the art style’s most notable represenatives was painter Katsushika Hokusai. His legendary block-printed series of artworks that captured Mount Fuji from varying viewpoints around Japan is the main inspiration for the size x ASICS GEL-LYTE OG 36 Views.
In tune with Japan’s celebrated attention for details and innovation, the shoe uses a water resistant suede upper combined with a ripstop toebox. For the very first time on this model, branded pull tabs are featured on both the tongue and heel. The upper’s blue tones and its water resistant construction reference Hokusai’s famous painting “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” – the most famous picture from his “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” series. Soft pink details adorn the laces, tongue and pull tabs as well as the white GEL sole. This accent color choice is inspired by the seasonal cherry blossoms seen on trees around Japan at only a very specific time of the year.
