To the Western world, Ramen represents one of those universal dishes that’s loved by office workers, college students and generally everybody who appreciates food that’s inexpensive and tasty at the same time. Originating from China, the hand-drawn noodle are nowadays commonly associated with Japanese cuisine, as the land of the rising sun famously put its on twist on Ramen and now serves them in special “Ramen-ya” restaurants. Adrian Bianco can give you a lecture on that by the way – and the guys at Saucony decided to dedicate a shoe to this beloved meal in their 2017 Holiday Saucony Select program.
Now there already have been quite a couple sneakers that draw inspiration from all types of foods, so you really need to bring your A game to stand out. And thankfully, the brand’s Senior Lifestyle Footwear Designer Josh Fraser did exactly that. The Grid 8500 appears with a smooth and perforated leather upper in Miso Brown, referencing the traditional soy bean seasoning used for Ramen soup. The heel and quarters reveal an engineered embroidered noodle-like material in white, while a translucent Saucony river logo flows along the side panel. The debossed leather tongue patch shows a traditional Japanese Ramen bowl, some more colorful food graphics can also be spotted underneath the semi-transparent outsole. In keeping with the theme, two pairs of speckled rope laces in either Nori Green Miso or Red Miso add finishing touches to the Grid 8500. And to keep your kicks fresh, the special release also includes a zipblock dust bag with custom graphics and nutrition facts which are inspired by the packaging of instant Ramen noodles.
