Raf Simons’ Latest adidas Sneakers Feature Optical Illusions
Belgian Fashion designer Raf Simons usually pushes the envelope with his adidas collabs, going for a bold and futuristic look. As the latest installment of his ongoing joint work with the brand, the Raf Simons x adidas Trompe L’Oeil pack features rather classic aesthetics though.
The base for each of the pack’s three styles is the RS Stan Smith, Simons’ take on the Three Stripes staple. But as a twist, all three sneakers feature the colorway of an archive adidas model printed on the upper. The French term Trompe-l’œil means “deceive the eye” and refers to an art technique that creates the optical illusion of a 3D image.
This technique was used to depict the colorways of the Micropacer, L.A. Trainer and Torsion Conquest Super. In addition, embossed Raf Simons branding on the quarter and the usual Stan Smith logos appear on the three shoes.
