Dutch sneaker retailer OGs Patta received one of the highest honors a store can hope for: an Air Jordan collaboration. As the first-ever European brand to partner with the Jumpman, they now present the Patta x Air Jordan 7 collection.
The choice of working on the 1992 silhouette was logical for Patta’s Guillaume Schmidt and Vincent van de Waal. With its strong ties to the mid-90s basketball hype, the global rise of hip hop culture and unique design pattern, the shoe is a favorite for the Patta guys.
“It was a golden era for hip-hop. It was a big time for me, a lot of very important albums that I carry with me still came out between ’92 and ’96. And aesthetically, those years had such strong, colorful and connected relationship to black empowerment. The VII also has a reference to Africa,” says Guillaume, a native of Suriname who grew up an hour from Amsterdam in basketball-crazed’s Hertogenbosch. ““It is my all-time favorite”, adds Vincent, who is Patta’s creative director.
Apart from the sneaker, the accompanying apparel was another deciding factor for the Air Jordan 7. “The VII apparel was out of this world. The products that we worked on come straight from a short Jordan clip from Barcelona that became super famous. It features a segment where Michael walks past a huge billboard of himself where he’s got the shoes on, and that image has been forever etched in my memory,” says Guillaume.
The Patta x Air Jordan 7 features the model’s signature synthetic tongue with a varying pattern. In addition, a leather and nubuck upper reminds of many classic AJ7 designs. The colorway combines tones of brown and beige with red accents, while striking “Patta” branding on the midsole catches the eye. Furthermore the shoes arrive in a printed special box. And to match the kicks, a track suit, shorts, t-shirt and bucket hat with the original 90s patterns complete the collection.
