For the first time ever, Berlin sneaker store Overkill teams up with Reebok for an exclusive sneaker collab. Taking inspiration from East Berlin in the mid-80s, the Overkill x Reebok Classic Berlin 1985 presents itself in a unique design.
When the Club C first released back in 1985, the German capital was still a divided city. And while any pair of Reebok sneakers was close to impossible to obtain for people in the Soviet sector, many of those raised in East Germany remember very distinct design characteristics from the former GDR. Based on the memories of their team members, Overkill worked these into this Club C 85.
Typical wallpaper, tablecloth and floor patterns reference design trends of the mid 80s and grace the mismatched lining. Combined with a butter-soft leather in ivory tones, the green corduroy tongue adds more vintage feel.
A closer look at the shoe reveals even more clever references to everyday life in East Germany. The lace locks read the term “Bückware”, which means “bottom-shelf goods”. In the GDR, this was a term for sought-after commodities which were often traded only beneath the counter.
The insoles show the messages that indicate you’re entering (left) or leaving (right) “Sektor Overkill”. During Berlin’s division, signs like these lined the streets to let people know which sector they are in. Overkill and Reebok branding on the tongue labels as well as the words “Berlin” and “1985” on the heels add finishing touches.
To deliver their Reebok collab in an appropriate packaging, Overkill also designed a special GDR box for the shoe. It features a retro print on the lid and contains the sneakers in a loose-knit shopping-bag. A matching apparel capsule then completes the collection. The tees, shorts and socks display an 80s style version of the Overkill logo, while a pin set for collectors serves as another nice goodie.
Overkill celebrates the launch of this collection with a GDR theme party at Klub der Republik, an old-established club in East Berlin. And for those who wish to refresh their knowledge on the GDR, the first 300 purchases include a free admission ticket to the GDR Museum Berlin.
