For their latest PUMA collaboration, the folks from Overkill came up with a truly unique concept. Based on a nuclear doomsday scenario, the Berlin sneaker stores imagines the Overkill x PUMA CELL Venom as a new species in a dystopian future.
The story behind the collab takes us back to the CELL Venom’s era of origin – but adds a significant twist. The year is 1999 and the Y2K crash actually happened. Even worse, all nuclear missiles on the planet launched due to a computer failure and mankind woke up the next day in the year 19100. Only few survived. However, there’s a contaminated beast that lights up what used to be the city of Berlin. And that is Overkill’s PUMA CELL sneaker.
For their design, the team chose a retro color palette which reminds of the late 90s. A gradiation of blue, a toxic neon yellow and white combined with reflective inserts emphasize the radiation. In terms of materials, suede, smooth leather and classic mesh also celebrate the good old days.
With an elaborate back story like that, the collab of course doesn’t just include a simple sneaker release. No, Overkill spared neither work nor expenese and even created a short film that shows the world around the shoe’s name and portraits the untold story behind it. Classic cinema posters spreaded all over (today’s) Berlin complement the video which launches on March 22, 2019. For a little preview, check out the film teaser below.
