This year marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most important events in Germany’s recent history. The fall of the Berlin Wall took place three decades ago, finally reuniting the country’s capital. The Overkill x adidas ZX 8000 No Walls Needed Pack celebrates this important turning point with two special Three Stripes sneakers.
Considering its history, the ZX 8000 proves to be a suitable base for this collab. The most obvious aspect is that the adidas shoe also originally released in the late 80s. Its “I WANT, I CAN” slogan perfectly mirrors the attitude of the peaceful revolution that ended the GDR’s oppressive regime. In addition, the ZX 8000 is a local favorite closely associated with the city of Berlin.
The two sneakers are sold together, with the addition of a second pair symbolizing the 100 German mark of “welcome money”. Visitors from the GDR received this amount upon entering West Germany, with visitor numbers increasing dramatically after 1989. Both shoes arrive in a special Berlin Wall box. Each of the four sneakers features a different design, allowing the wearer to mix and match freely. They all use synthetic suede and mesh uppers, a reflective material on heels and webbing stripes on the side panels. Marked with four unique symbols on each heel, the design pays homage to crucial themes of EQUALITY, INDIVIDUALITY, FREEDOM, and UNITY. Printed laces and the “1 of 1989” tongue label then finalize the sneakers.
DID YOU KNOW?
Exactly 10 years ago, Overkill already did a Berlin Wall-themed collab – back then with New Balance. At the 20th anniversary, they released three 577s in the colors of Black (for the Berlin bear), red (for the Soviet occupation zone) and blue (for the US occupation zone).
