During the last century and beyond, Berlin has lived through an extraordinary history and tells countless tales that make the city as unique as it gets. From being and industrial metropolis to an existance as a divided city during the post-war era to developing into one of the cultural hotspots in modern times, the German capital has a very special story of its own. Of course, this is also visible in the city’s architecture – and there’s a type of building that’s closely associated with Berlin: the “Plattenbau”, or short “Platte”. These prefabricated high-rises emerged in the 1960s as a convenient option to house a lot of people while saving space. Nowadays, the grey concrete blocks are often seen as sparse, harsh or just plain ugly – but they also have their fans and the people who actually live in the appartements within definitely had and still have a massive impact on Berlin’s street culture.
That’s why Nike decided to dedicate a very special edition of the concrete classic Dunk Low silhouette to the “Platte”. Decked out in a grey leather upper, laser etchings imitate the systematic patterns of the buildings. The blue and gold lace tips show the words “Traum” and “Tristesse”, referencing to both the dreams and dreariness that co-exist so closely within a Plattenbau. To light the upper up a bit, the shoes feature the numbers “D85” and “D17”, alluding to the Dunk’s initial year of release and the launch of this special edition. Limited to only 240 pairs, the respective number of each shoe is also placed on one of the tongue tags.
