With its deconsructive approach and DIY aesthetics, Virgil Abloh’s “The Ten” collaboration on a selection of 10 Nike silhouettes didn’t only spawn some of the most celebrated sneakers of 2017 – it also served as a blueprint for countless customizers to apply this kind of design language to more Swoosh silhouettes. Now obviously one particular model was absent from Abloh’s original line-up: the ever-popular Air Max 1. But Australian customizer outlet Bespoke IND took it upon them to add this +1 to the party, already presenting a first version of the 1987 Nike classic with OFF-WHITE-ish reworks back in September 2017. While 8 pairs were made-to-order during the atlier’s Melbourne workshop, the Bespoke folks now unveil a new iteration which is dubbed “The White Version”. This Nike Air Max 1 OFF-WHITE custom is done with a mix of premkum leather, suede and mesh, decorated with colorful patches and applications as well as a translucent heel overlay. The obligatory white midsole features gum bottoms in the official pictures shot by sneaker photographer Lucas Blackman, but there are said to be variations from pair to pair with White and Black outsole options also available.
What sets this custom apart from others is the fact that Bespoke IND actually has worked with both Nike and Virgil Abloh in the past – that’s why one of the only 33 pairs made is already reserved for the OFF-WHITE founder. The other 32 pairs will be available for order on the Bespoke IND website on Australia Day (January 26). As another unique feature to this special release, each shoe will include a personal ID pressure point to ensure each clients pair is 1-of-1.
