When Mizuno announced the launch of their heritage-infused sportsstyle category earlier this year, it was this shoe right here that got everybody talking. The Wave Rider 1 OG, first released back in 1998, didn’t lose nothing of its freshness over two decades. That’s why Mizuno decided to conserve the shoe’s original appeal by not changing a bit of what cultivated its hardcore fanbase.
The Wave Rider 1 OG features a white dual-mesh and full grain leather upper with a partially black vamp, white midsole and black outsole. Mizuno’s signature Runbird logo appears in red on the toebox and heel counter, while a black on the quarter panel is outlined with gold stitching.
Reflective piping and lace keepers nod to the sneakers running heritage. The energetic style of the shoe is highlighted by vibrant elements like speckled wave-shapes in the back of the midsole and a dynamic design language in general.
But these trainers were also the first model to use the signature Mizuno Wave cushioning technology – which is still used in many of the brand’s current styles. With unparalled stability and optimized energy return, the sole unit makes every step feel like riding the sea waves. To highlight the complex anatomy of the Wave Rider 1, each pair comes in a reissued 90s shoebox filled with stickers detailing the shoe’s construction.
