Famed Tokyo sneaker store mita once again teams up with New Balance for a special project. This time, the duo celebrates the Japanese capital’s street culture quite literally. With its striking crosswalk mita sneakers x New Balance CM996 TOKYO CROSSING adds an eye-catching design to the subtle sneaker.
The 996 is another premium runner from NB’s famous 99X series. Even though it’s not quite as popular as the 990 or 997, the silhouette still has lots of fans – especially among classic runner connoisseurs. For this collab, mita appliaed a crosswalk pattern to the pigskin suede upper. While the grey color obviously represents the usual asphalt tone, it also is one of the go-to New Balance colors. Fruthermore, the whole concept of a crosswalk not only alludes to the obvious road marking. On a more profound note, it also represents the various people connected to a storied silhouette like that – and the characters that come and go over the course of time.
A bright accent then appears on the inner sides of both shoes, where the “N” logo assumes a flashy green color. Known as “Uguisu”, this particular shade is one of Tokyo’s signature colors. Finally, the insoles feature a print pattern with the signature wire mesh known from the mita store in the city’s Ameyoko district.
DID YOU KNOW?
mita’s Creative Director Shigeyuki Kunii definitely has a thing for the more underappreciated NB silhouettes. In fact, the joint work with fellow Japanese brand realmad HECTIC on the MT580 created a buzz around the model which initally wasn’t exactly celebrated within the sneaker community. When approached with the silhouette, the folks at New Balance Japan were rather apprehensive since the 580 “was readily found in bargain bins” at that time.
