Even though it only returned to the scene a couple of months ago, Mizuno’s Wave Rider 1 already is a familiar face in release calandars. The silhouette previously gained acclaim after collaborations with mita sneakers, Highsnobiety and in form of an OG release. As the next installment of the Kazoku series, we now get a first look at the La MJC x Mizuno Wave Rider.
La MJC founder Michael Dupouy explained the shoe’s design inspirations via his Instagram account. The striking colors of of red, green and black reference David Hammons’ “African-American Flag” art piece from 1990. The flag mixes the colors of the Pan-African flag with the Star-Spangled Banner to highlight African-American identity in the US.
To pay homage to this important work of art, Dupouy applied these striking colors onto the Wave Rider 1’s vibrant surface. As usual, suede and smooth leather overlays cover the shoe’s mesh base. The distinguished sole unit shines in crisp white, while the red outsole provides another dynamic color accent. Co-branded Mizuno and La MJC logos on the tongue, heel and insoles round off this collab. Every pair comes with a set of three laces in black, red, green.
