Finnish sneakers brand Karhu is dashing into Fall season with some classic runner style. The freshly returned Karhu ChampionAir blends the brand’s signature running formula with pioneering Air technology and quality materials.

The ChampionAir will release in three colorways: Jaffa Orange / Black, Classic Blue / White, and Black / White. The upper wraps the foot with original nylon mesh for breathability and color blocked suede for support.

Also, the traditional “M-logo” construction helps to provide support through the arch for additional comfort. And the dual density top surface midsole with Air Cushioning adds cushioning in the heel.

A million-selling hit

Here’s a quick historic re-cap: The Karhu ChampionAir made its debut in 1977 and remained a fixture in the collection until 1984. It was an international hit and sold over 1,000,000 pairs globally.

The ChampionAir was popular in Finland, but also in countries like Sweden, Spain and The Netherlands. According to Karhu, when sport stores in Amsterdam received the model, the queues were reported to be 200 people deep. Members of the Spanish Royal family were known to wear the featured model in their youth.

What really set the shoe apart was the patented Karhu Air Cushion midsole. As the brand proudly said: “Karhu was the first sports brand to develop a midsole system using Air Cushion. The Air Cushion under the heel and the elevated arch support considerably reduced strain on the knees, pelvis and small of the back.”

In terms of style, the ChampionAir also introduced color paneling and a colorful design that caught the attention of competitive runners. It’s a formula that still holds true today, especially with the trend towards retro runners.

The new Karhu ChampionAir will release globally on Saturday, August 26 at Karhu and select retailers with a EUR 100.00 price tag. For more about Karhu, read our History Check.
