6 years ago, two Boston giants in footwear collaborated for the first time on the much celebrated Concepts x New Balance 999 “Kennedy”. The original shoe was inspired by New England’s sailing culture and President John F. Kennedy’s passion for this. Designed by then-Concepts employee and sneaker industry veteran Frank The Butcher, the “Kennedy” is regared as both a blueprint for shop collabs and being one of the best examples for this category.
Now Concepts announced a Made in US remake of the model – the Concepts x New Balance MADE US 999 “Hyannis”. Despite the new nickname, the shoe once again draws inspiration from the village of Hyannis’ sailing heritage and closely resembles the 2011. In addition to the original blue colorway, the Boston sneaker boutique also unveils a red sample version that was never released before. Both colorways are done in a pigskin suede and premium embossed nubuck with nautical flags on the sockliner and tongue tag. Different hues of light brown, beige and grey are combined on the upper which is set atop an ABZORB sole unit. Finished in in Skowhegan, Maine – one of New Balance’s five New England manufacturing facilities – the sneaker now finally shines with the premium quality it derserves.
