At the turn of the 20th century, an artistic countermovement arose in Germany to protest against the prevalent academic arts of the time. Inspired by natural forms as well as the rejection of symmetry and outdated rules, this style is known as “Art Noveau” – or “Jugendstil” in German-speaking countries. The two main centres of Art Noveau were Munich and Darmstadt, with the latter today being the hometown of premium sneaker store asphaltgold.
For their joint project with ASICS, the asphaltgold team now took inspiration from the Jugendstil influences that still characterize parts of the city. Especially the artist colony of Mathildenhöhe and its many unique buildings served as the perfect blueprint for this Gel-DS Trainer. A butter-soft suede material with toebox perforations forms a natural base in the Evening Sand color. Playful elements in Hot Pink and turqoise adorn the upper, which reveals the underlying neoprene tongue with a specially designed Art Noveau pattern.
The asymmetric insoles show a simple co-branded logo design on the left and elaborate floral artworks on the right shoe.
Exclusively at asphaltgold, the sneakers arrive in a special metal box that includes not only the branded flatlaces but also two additional sets of laces to match the different upper colors.
