One of the most legendary sneakers of all time turns 30 this year: the GEL-LYTE III. Needless to say, ASICS puts the spotlight on the shoe this year and celebrates its flagship model with all kinds of special releases. One of the first in line is the ASICS GEL-LYTE III OG “Kobe Beef”.
The shoe’s design takes inspirations from a Japanese delicacy, the world-famous Wagyu beef from the Tajima strain of Japanese Black cattle. Originating in the city of Kōbe, the beef is known for its flavor and tenderness – and its characteristic marbled texture. To mimick the unique look, ASICS dipped the GEL-LYTE III in a distinctive rose color. In addition, the premium leather upper uses cowhide from the Tajima cattle.
To also highlight the silhouette itself, the translucent outsole shows the anatomy of the GEL-LYTE III. “1990” embroidery appears on the heels of the shoes to remember the year of the model’s original release.
DID YOU KNOW?
There are many mysteries that surround Kōbe beef. In particular, many people believe that the cows receive massages and are fed beer. The truth is that some farmers actually massage their cows, but only if there aren’t enouugh open air runs for them – the massages help to keep the animals from cramping. As for the beer myth: the common cattle feed for Tajima cows contains brewers grains, so that might be the origin of this story.
