Always pushing boundaries and looking to refine their latest innovations, adidas announces another major coup. To introduce the adidas UltraBOOST 20 “Space Race”, the German sportswear brand teamed up with ISS U.S. National Laboratory. Together with the International Space Station, they’re planing to send BOOST into space.
Even though sneakers and spacecrafts don’t share much similarities at first glance, they do have something in common. Just like a space shuttle, the UB20 leaves out everything that’s unnecessary to make sure each element has a specific performance-driven function.
The sneaker features a new and advanced Primeknit upper made with Tailored Fiber Placement (TFP) technology. This technique lays down fibers to the millimeter, resulting in a high-performance, lightweight upper. In addition, the optimized BOOST sole captures the energy in every stride and returns it at toe-off to propel the runner forward. Other features include a Stretchweb outsole with Continental rubber bottoms as well as a Torsion Spring for enhanced support.
Thanks to adidas’ partnership with the ISS, astronauts will take BOOST material with them on a supply mission to the International Space Station. There, they will examine the material’s malleability in a zero-gravity environment. On the basis of the research results, adidas aims to improve the energy return of their BOOST midsole even further.
An ISS U.S. National Laboratory Patch appears on the UltraBOOST 20 Space Race to celebrate this unique partnership. On top of that, adidas and the world’s leading human performance lab EXOS created a program that let’s you discover the training program of an actual astronaut. You can download the program here.
