Whether you’re a seasoned sneaker aficionado or a newbie, you know that so much of what we’re seeing sucks. Other sneakerheads, stores, releases, models, colorways – there’s something to complain about around every corner. But sometimes we should change our perspective and reflect. We’re coming together because we’re all into footwear, how great is that? In fact, what we do is so much more amazing than we realize. And sometimes we should sit back, relax and celebrate the awesomeness of our culture. Here are 13 reasons why the sneaker community is simply the best ever. (Header illustration: Josh Parkin)

1. It’s about friendship

Being into sneakers may superficially be interpreted as pure consumption. But the truth is, if you really have a passion for it, this is a community thing. You’re not in this alone and you’re building friendships along the way – often without noticing. You’re together on release days, in Facebook groups or Whatsapp chats and everywhere else. It’s a community thing. (Pic: Ruhrpott Chapter by Sneakers Magazine)

2. It’s always connected to art and other creative activities

Whatever angle you look at us, we’re a bunch of creative minds. There’s so much energy in this thing on every level – the design, colorways, photos, videos, campaigns, stores or releases. And as a result, lots of people who’re into sneakers have taken their passion to other fields. Whether you want to build your own design agency, shoot photos or organize events, sneakers can lead your way. (Pic: @ghicapopa)

3. Everyone has his own style (almost everyone)

Of course a lot of people buy the same shit and look alike. But don’t forget that there are still so many different tastes out there. It’s a diverse game, you can buy and collect whatever you want and that’s just great. Look at some of the amazing collectors we’ve featured on this site and in our print mag so far.

4. The photography is sick

Photography plays such an important role in sneakers nowadays and it’s amazing what level we as a community have reached. Do you know any other activity or field with so many great shooters? (Pic: @kane)

5. The history is rich

Sneakers are about history. Period. We’re building on the foundations of the past and once you truly get into it, you will learn so much. Your passion for adidas or Nike will automatically lead you to Adi Dassler or Bill Bowerman – and that’s just the start. It’s a great education.

6. The progression never stops

You don’t have to be around for three decades to see that this thing never stops changing. Just a little over a year ago, adidas dropped the NMD and look what happened in that short timeframe. And the other brands aren’t sleeping either. We’ll see so much development and it’s a fantastic time to be into sneakers.

7. There’s no age limit

Unlike sports that really destroy your body, sneakers can be there until old age. It may change and take a back seat in your life at one point, but you can be a sneakerhead until you’re ready to step into the grave – with the footwear of your choice. (Illustration: Peter O’Toole)

8. It’s a global community

We don’t build walls but a global community. Sneakerheads are everywhere – well, at least in the developed countries among people not struggling to survive. Your passion may lead you to travels and many adventures with likeminded people from around the globe. (Pic: Showstudio)

9. The gossip is great

Being into sneakers is a multi-media 24/7 thing and most of it is just an ongoing conversation with lots of great gossip. Sometimes it’s too much but if you don’t take it serious, it’s great entertainment.

10. The hunt never stops

Every sneakerhead is on his personal hunt. You know what you want and you find out how to get it. It’s one of the biggest thrills and those who don’t know it, will never figure out what it means.

11. Sneakers are about sports

There’s no way around sports if you’re into sneakers – even if you like to spend most of your time behind a screen. Sneakers are developed for sports and activity and we’re being educated about it along the way

12. Collabs are great

Of course not every collab is good – far from that – but if you cut through the crap, there are great stories told on a pair of shoes in a box. Good collaborations are small pieces of art and deserve to be in a museum. (Pic: Lobster Dunk by Concepts Store)

13. The passion is without comparison

The greatest thing about being passionate about sneakers is the passion itself! This is the thing that unites us and the engine that will take us further. (Pic: Deadstock)
