HAL x monkey time x ASICS GEL-LYTE V “Ichimatsu”
For a collab that crosses the equator, Australian sneaker store Highs and Lows links up with Japanese mainstays monkey time and ASICS. The theme of this joint project draws inspiration from the traditional arts of the latter’s home country.
“Ichimatsu” is a checkerboard pattern, named after actor Sanokawa Ichimatsu (1722-62) who used it on his trousers. Throughout the centuries, the decorative motif was used in fields such as architecture, fashion or interior design.
Now HAL and monkey time apply Ichimatsu patterns to the always popular GEL-LYTE V. At first the running silhouette sports an inconspicuous look, due to a subtle mix of white, light grey and black.
The most interesting parts turns out to be the insoles and the translucent outsole though which reveals a black-and-white checkerboard design. And as nice little detail, a set of checkered rope laces also subtly complements the look.
With proper outfit coordination in mind, HAL and monkey time also present three pieces of matching apparel. Included are a “Made in Japan” track top and pants, as well as a special iteration of HAL’s original cut t-shirt.
